October 28, 2023 Umbral Eclipse of October
October 28, 2023
The October 28 umbral eclipse is the final eclipse event of the year. During this eclipse, a relatively small portion of the moon, about 12 percent, will pass through the darkest (umbral) shadow of the earth. Small portions of the penumbral phase of this eclipse are visible in the eastern portions of the United States and South America. However, in these locations, the event will occur relatively low on the horizon, and in any event, the penumbral phase is difficult to detect even with a telescope. The umbral phase will be visible in most of Africa, Europe, Asia, Russia, China, and the South Pacific including Australia, Indonesia, and New Guinea.
