May 5, 2023 Penumbral Eclipse

May 5, 2023

This is the first of two eclipses that will occur in 2023.  This eclipse is a penumbral eclipse during which the moon passes through the relatively faint outer earth’s shadow.  During a penumbral eclipse, there is only a faint darkening of the moon making the event very difficult to observe.   At maximum eclipse, the moon is nearly fully immersed in earth’s penumbra and it may be just possible to detect the eclipse once about 60 percent of the moon is in shadow.  The eclipse will last about four hours.

This eclipse is visible over most of Africa, Europe, Russia, and the South Pacific including Australia and Indonesia.
